Tuning
Piano Tuning is the most essential regularly scheduled form of piano maintenance. Tuning is the aligning of the musical pitch of the note of the piano, by adjusting the tension of the piano’s strings, in order to achieve a desired musical effect.
Piano tuning involves the physical manipulation and movement of approximately 200 tuning pins which alter the tension of the wire which is attached to each tuning pin, in order to change pitch, either higher (sharp) or lower (flat). Tuning is an art in itself and takes many years to develop the knowledge, skills and proficiencies necessary for artistic tunings. The overall skills needed for tuning require exhaustive practice, patience and dedication. Piano tuning in Alberta on a regular basis is especially important due to seasonal changes and frequent swings in temperature and humidity levels.
Pitch Raises – What is it and why is it necessary? A pitch raise (or pitch correction) is needed if the piano is more than 5 cents sharp or flat. If a piano is in need of a pitch raise, the first tuning is designed to pull your piano’s pitch slightly sharp of concert A-440, knowing that the strings will stretch and go flat again. A second tuning, called a “fine tuning,” is then done immediately to stabilize and correct the tuning caused by the strings stretching.
